Setting Information
[This is a work in progress and subject to change at my whims!]

The setting of Inescapable Ironic was (and still is) a work in progress. It has changed numerous times since I first concieved it about five years ago, and it keeps changing as I flesh out bits and pieces of the Solar System and change them to fit right. This is its current incarnation.

Places
Earth
Earth, by itself, hasn't changed much. After the oil crisis of the late 21st century, the UN decided to move off-world to the newly-constructed Endymion International Lunar Base, where they could govern the world from a more objective point of view. The governing bodies of all Earth nations were invited to take part in the move, and most agreed, the result being a mass exodus of government and city officials to the luxurious and well-appointed Lunar Base. Earth has not grown much since that time, but neither has it fallen into ruin. Nowadays, the humans remaining on Earth are either sentimentalists who can't bear to leave their home planet behind for the stars (at least permanently) or too poor to afford the move to the affluent metropolis of Endymion. It's much quieter, and just a little strange to see the shells of abandoned government buildings lying dormant among the skyscrapers.

The official language of Earth is English, though by the current year the language is so full of borrowed words and phrases that it might be hard to recognize. Other languages (including pure English) are still taught in some more elite schools and universities, and it's considered an accomplishment to know more than three languages.

The Moon
The Moon is still a desolate, gray rock on the surface, with the sole exceptions being the spires and domes that climb out of the surface and house the government of Earth. Inside, the city of Endymion bustles with life, a teeming metropolis of all cultures and languages. Endymion and the Moon itself are considered neutral ground, and Earth's major governments and the United Nations have their headquarters here. Also here is the first off-Earth amusement park, Endymion Disney.

Mars
Mars is a verdant paradise, comparable to Earth before pollution destroyed it. Aside from the vast areas of land governed by the native hyperi citizens, there are two large cities jointly ruled by the human/hyperi alliance: the 'capital' city of Redcity and the smaller, cultural center of Glaston. Redcity is starkly divided between the bustling Human side and the refined Hyperi side, while Glason is a bit more homogenous in culture. Human government on Mars is located in Redcity and subject to the whims of the hyperi governers.

Outside of the two human cites are miles upon miles of green and verdant forests, vast grasslands, and large tracts of desert, a testament to the ecological disaster that destroyed most of Mars' natural water supply. Underground canals and a complex system of aquaducts provide water to the natives and allow the planet to flourish despite the shortage of water, but with the deserts slowly growing and the greenlands shrinking, the hyperi are wondering what exactly they can do to stop it.

Venus
Venus is a frontier planet, only recently terraformed and made habitable by the human settlers. It's orange and desert-like; most settlers are on a nocturnal schedule, sleeping during the harshest hours of daylight and moving around at night. Smugglers and other unsavory characters abound.

Hyperi
When Humanity set its sights on the Red Planet, there was no stopping them. That is, until they landed on the surface of that foriegn world and found it rich with plant and animal life, under the watchful eye of a race of native Martians eerily similar to humans themselves. The initial reaction was terror and misunderstanding, but eventually the intelligent natives, calling themselves hyperi (a name in their native tongue translating roughly to 'tall ones') made the human astronauts understand that the hyperi were natives to the land and that while they appreciated the show of shiny coins and paper the astronauts waved at them, they had a complicated system of monetary exchange already and no, the humans could not put that flag in their front lawn so remove it right away. It took some time, but they finally made humanity understand that they weren't the smartest creatures in the universe anymore, and that any attempt to wage war upon the hyperi would be met with similar force. It honestly didn't take as long as they expected.

Hyperi are actually quite similar to humans in general build. Scientists rejoiced at this apparent proof of parallel evolution. On average, hyperi are taller than humans by about five inches, meaning the tallest tower (to a human) at about seven feet tall. They are graceful, lithe creatures, leading many humans to refer to them as 'elves,' which hyperi find amusing. (The hyperi themselves often call humans 'uharni,' a native word for a folk creature similar to a gremlin or a troll. They find this amusing as well.) Hyperi have angular features. Their eyes are almost uniformly identical: they have dark purple/red irises with a faint silver border on the outer and inner edges. Their pupils are black, but reflect green in light (they have very good night vision, at the sacrifice of some color definition). Several unique features include blood vessels surrounding their eyes that are flooded when they get angry or excited, rimming their eyelids in black; another is their ears, which are long, tipped with black, and pointed at rest. In times of stress or excitement, they extend and fan out, making the hyperi in question look larger and more deadly.

N'var
The N'var are, basically, humanoid lizards. Less basically, they are an advanced spacefaring race from beyond our Solar System that happen to look a lot like humanoid lizards. Do NOT call them 'lizard-people,' though. The first diplomat to do that was sent home in several boxes. Everyone's still a little confused as to how they did that.

The N'var race is a matriarchal technocracy -- they place technical know-how above everything else. They created the interstellar drive that allows for travel between galaxies.
